1.  How to Win Friends and Influence People

Dale Carnegie

THE IDEA

Curiosity over judgment. When you meet new people, ask questions instead of talking about yourself.

WHAT I DO WITH IT

Let people tell you their life stories. Ask, don’t not perform. Use it in hiring, in client conversations, and in every room you walk into. The second lever is encouragement over criticism: an under performer is already criticizing herself far harder than you would. Let them borrow your belief until their own arrives.

LESSON LEARNT

Belief is a loan you extend to people before they can afford it. Criticism does not motivate; being heard does.

2.  Man’s Search for Meaning

Viktor Frankl

THE IDEA

Circumstances do not decide how you feel. The meaning you assign them does.

WHAT I DO WITH IT

The reframe: winners and losers stand in near-identical conditions and assign different meanings to them. Pair it with negative visualization: if a man in a camp could accept death, you can accept a failed launch, a bad quarter, a talk that lands flat. Accepting the worst outcome is precisely what frees you to take the risk.

LESSON LEARNT

Name the worst case out loud. Once it is named and accepted, it stops governing the decision.

3.  Managing Oneself

Peter Drucker

THE IDEA

You cannot manage yourself without knowing yourself and everything else is downstream of that.

WHAT I DO WITH IT

The questions the book forces: How do you actually learn: audio, visual, written? What are you genuinely good at, as opposed to what you have decided you are bad at? Is that weakness real, or is it a belief you inherited and never tested?

LESSON LEARNT

Self-awareness is not a soft skill, it is a talent strategy. Leaders who can predict their own behaviour build teams that fit, and better people agree to join them.

4.  Rich Dad Poor Dad

Robert Kiyosaki

THE IDEA

Wealthy people do not trade time for money. They use money to buy time and to buy the skills that make their time worth more.

WHAT I DO WITH IT

Spend on courses and books and raise what an hour of yours is worth, rather than adding hours.

LESSON LEARNT

Collect experience before income.

5.  Crushing It

Gary Vaynerchuk

THE IDEA

Document the work you are already doing.

WHAT I DO WITH IT

You are already an expert in the thing you do every day. The common failure is going in character on subjects you do not know, chasing trends outside your actual knowledge.

LESSON LEARNT

Authority comes from the work already in front of you.

The Lessons, Distilled

1.  Ask. Curiosity gets you further into a room than credentials do.

2.  Lend people your belief before they have earned it ~ that is what moves performance, not criticism.

3.  The meaning you assign to a circumstance is the only variable you fully control.

4.  Name the worst case. Accepting it is what makes the risk takeable.

5.  Know how you learn and what you are actually good at. Every hire and every system you build sits on top of that answer.

6.  Buy skill, not hours. Raise what your time is worth instead of selling more of it.

7. Document the work you are already doing. Do not manufacture expertise you do not have.

8.  A book you do not act on is entertainment. Convert it into a habit or it changed nothing.

Books are not useful if you do not do anything about them. The reading is not the work - the change in behaviour is.

Happy reading, with love Christina
